FREE Fonts

There are a fantastic variety of free font resources on the Web. These range from traditional designs to the artsy and far-out. Few things can make your computer and your graphics designs come alive more than having a variety of fonts. Click here or here for info on how to install fonts on your computer.

  • Fonts for Christmas - Here's a small, but quality selection of free Christmas and New Year's-themed fonts. Perfect if you're preparing a Christmas presentation or if you'd like to give your Web site a festive look. Selections include "Candy Canes" and "Christmas Ornaments."
  • Acid Fonts - Plenty of free fonts here, organized alphabetically. Fonts are in ZIP form for faster download. Each page on the site shows a graphical representation of each font. The site is updated monthly.
  • TrueType Font Library - Excellent German site offering freeware fonts. Here, you'll find lots of TrueType fonts for use in your graphics, DTP and word processing tasks. All Font Samples are 22 points in size. There are standard, design and symbol fonts here.
  • Cool Archive - Here's a well-designed free fonts resource (which offers much else, as well). Cool Archive serves up over 600 fonts, for use with both PCs and Macs. They're listed alphabetically; you may preview them and then download the ones you want as compressed Zip files. Cool Archive also offers free graphics and more.
  • The Font Empire - A large and growing archive of free Windows TrueType fonts for download. Currently includes over 1,000 fonts and more are added every day. Each font has an example shown for easy previewing. The fonts are conveniently arranged alphabetically and by style. Categories include Bulky/Wavy, Calligraphy, Decorative, Extreme, Funky, Futuristic, Gothic/Horror, Handwriting, Outline and Regular.
  • Kevin's Free Fonts - This site serves up over 700 Windows TrueType fonts, organized alphabetically. There's also a helpful "how-to" on installing fonts on your system, as well as a roundup of free font utilities.
  • A+B+C Fonts - This is a good collection of free fonts from the people at A+B+C Web Graphics. Fonts are organized alphabetically and you may preview each one before downloading it. Fonts are available in ZIP format.
  • Font Freak - A nicely designed, constantly updated resource, Font Freak offers thousands of free fonts for both Windows and Macs, both original and otherwise, organized alphabetically. You can preview each selection and, if you like it, download a ZIP compressed version. There's also a good selection of free dingbats.
  • Blue Vinyl Free Fonts - This elegantly designed, well-organized free fonts site manages to do everything right. There's a broad selection of TrueType fonts, listed by category and you can preview each font before downloading a fast-loading ZIP version. Blue Vinyl also offers a helpful mailing list to keep you on top of what's happening in the world of fonts. Categories here include Deco Cafe, Rock Star, Gothic, Modular 2000, Cyber Phonic, Grrlz Stuff, Retrobats, etc.
  • Kemosabe's Font Source - This site offers a nice roundup of free TrueType fonts for Windows and Macs. Each font has a full character set, with no missing letters. Each preview has been "carefully anti-aliased for your viewing pleasure."
  • Funny Fonts - There's a nice selection of freeware fonts are available at this site. All are in Windows TrueType format, compressed in ZIP format for faster downloading. Categories include Dingbats, Dingfonts and a "Font of the Week." There are some really cool, off-beat fonts here.
  • Dingbat Dungeon - Here's a free font site unlike any we've seen before. They specialize in freeware fonts for role-playing gamers. Fonts here are designed to be used to map out dungeons and tunnels for use in games such as Dungeons & Dragons. This is a small collection, but more fonts are promised soon.
  • FontPage - Do you have a bunch of fonts scattered all over your system? Bring order out of chaos, with this essential free font utility. FontPage lets you easily examine and compare all the fonts on your computer. Lots of neat features, including a slick interface and the ability to print an image of any installed font on your PC. (For Windows: 390 kilobytes).
  • Divide By Zero - A welcome addition to the Web's free font resources, Divide By Zero serves up a eye-catching collection of original TrueType fonts. They're free to use, but may not be resold (as part of a collection on CD, for example). Webmaster Tom Murphy doesn't beat around the bush on this site; he gets straight to the fonts on the main page. Each font is annotated with interesting commentary about its creation and suggestions for use. For those in a hurry, you can get all the fonts in a convenient ZIP file.
  • Font Microscope - Here's a handy free utility that helps you display all fonts and font characters easily (such as commonly used letters, numbers and ASCII characters). It also provides an input/output preview panel. (For Windows).
  • IC Font - Here's a helpful free font utility. IC Font helps you browse through installed fonts on your computer. It's easy to use, but highly functional. You can view detailed information on your screen and printer fonts, compare them, sort them, print them, view ASCII codes for a specific font and much more.
  • Astigmatic One Eye Foundry - A major resource, Astigmatic offers many original TrueType freeware fonts for both Windows and Macs. When you click on a listing here, you're taken to a separate page that helpfully displays the full font set and offers a detailed description.
  • Windows 95 Font Smoother - Great, free utility that previously was available only with the commercial Microsoft Plus! package. This program makes text easier to read and more pleasant to look at. Note: This utility will only work on machines capable of, and set to, 16bit (HiColor) color display modes or higher. Note: this utility should not be installed on machines running Microsoft Windows 98. (Win 98 has font smoothing built in).
  • Free TrueType Fonts for the Web - This site by Microsoft offers free fonts for use with Windows and Macs. The sets include the new Euro currency symbol. Install these TrueType fonts, and whenever you visit a Web site that specifies them, you'll see pages exactly as the site designer intended.
  • Fontopolis - This site recently underwent a major expansion. It now features over 40 pages and a delightful, colorful design. Fontopolis is a site that serves up one or two of the "best free fonts" each week for PC users, in an attractive, entertaining and amusing way. Also includes archives, links and special font-related features. All fonts are in Windows TrueType formats for Windows 95, although you can make them work with a Mac.
  • Happy Hour Fonts - Here's a hip, new free fonts site "targeted toward Generation X." Categories include graffiti, grunge, themes, dingbats and "foreign flavors."
  • Spinola Free Fonts - There's over 400 free fonts at this bilingual (English & Spanish) site. Categories include Asian, Balloon, Balls, Blackletter, Broken, Brush Stroke, Chisled, Computer, Crazy, Decorative, Dingbats, Handwritten, Historical, Outline, Runic, Sans Serif, Scary, Script, Slant, Star Trek, Stencil, Typewriter, Uncial and Western.
  • FontPage - This essential free font utility lets you examine and compare all fonts on your system, view them with all type specifications available (bold, italic, underline, as well as in 3D) and print a font page of any installed font on your computer. (For Windows).
  • Font Mania - This is one classy free font site. I almost expected there to be valet parking here! Font Mania offers over 400 free Windows TrueType fonts, conveniently organized. There's a "Top 10" listing and an archive of past favorites. A nice collection, with many fonts that we've not seen elsewhere. This site offers a message board for you to place requests on. There's also helpful tips and tricks on using fonts.
  • FontLister (direct download: 234K) - If you have a lot of fonts on your computer, then you need this free essential utility. FontLister allows you to quickly view, browse, print, and work with your fonts. FontLister's latest version is shareware, but you can still get version 2, which is FREE. FontLister's home page is here.
  • Larabie Free Fonts - A popular, well-designed free fonts site, Larabie offers fonts in five general categories: "Fun," "Future," "Rough," "Tidy," and "Style." There's also information on making your own fonts, free fonts links and more.
  • Font Farm 4 Freaks - This is an eye-catching freeware font site. Categories include "Futuristic," "Handwriten," "Weird," "Gothic," and more. Each font has a helpful description and you can see a sample display.
  • KatGyrlr's Fontain of Youth - A freeware and shareware font site that includes many cool and unusual fonts. Nothing ordinary here. Fonts are available in ZIP format for quicker downloading. Installation instructions available.
  • Free Musical Fonts - Matthew Hindson's site offers free music notation fonts, such as tablature clefs and metronome markings. For Windows and Macs.
  • The Font Pool - Over 1,000 Truetype freeware and "charityware" fonts (mostly for Windows), with previews and character maps. This site also features many other great typography resources such as a type classification guide (A guide to classifying typefaces with examples). There's also a page layout guide, a logo type guide, a mixing type guide, Windows and Mac typography software and a typography glossary with hundreds of entries. Also helpful is the font search engine, to help you quickly find what you need.
  • Free Font Fiesta - Do you tire easily of the installed fonts on your computer and yearn to see your words displayed with little feet attached to them or blood dripping off the serifs or as if they have been carved out of hunks of pungent Swiss cheese? If so, click over to this site. A free font to download each week and a very complete link list brought to you by Mary Forrest, "Fontmonger to the Masses."
  • Slipknot - A new Truetype font served up every day. Stuff for Macs, too. Note: not all are free; fonts are marked as either freeware or shareware. Also includes info on the foundry responsible for each font. There's also a font "Tip of the Day."
  • Vance's Font Page - A different freeware or shareware font served up daily. Many eye-catching, off-beat and avant-garde designs are on tap at this French site (which is in English). Past fonts available, too. An archive page is put up every Monday.
  • David and Alex's Font World - Plenty of eye-catching TrueType fonts here, with instructions on how to use them.
  • Looking for Fonts - Lots of free original Windows TrueType format fonts here. You may download these fonts and do whatever you'd like to with them "as long as you don't make money out of using them." The fonts may be redistributed as long as the text file in the ZIP file is distributed with the font.
